Sonic Youth was an American rock band formed in New York City in 1981. Sonic Youth emerged from the experimental no wave art and music scene in New York before evolving into a more conventional rock band and becoming a prominent member of the American noise rock scene. Sonic Youth has been praised for having “redefined what rock guitar could do” using a wide variety of unorthodox guitar tunings while preparing guitars with objects like drumsticks and screwdrivers to alter the instruments’ timbre. The band was a pivotal influence on the alternative and indie rock movements. Influences vary from Genres like Avant-Garde & No Wave to Prototypical Punk & Garage Rock featuring bands like The Velvet Underground, The Stooges & MC5, New York Dolls & Patti Smith Group to Hardcore Punk & Post-Punk featuring bands like Black Flag, The Fall & Wire to Music Artists/Groups like Madonna, Public Enemy, Neil Young/Crazy Horse, & Joni Mitchell.
