Michael Eugene Archer (February 11, 1974 – October 14, 2025), better known by his stage name D’Angelo (/diˈændʒəloʊ/), was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer. Widely regarded as a pioneer of the neo-soul movement. D’Angelo‘s pioneering sound is rooted in 1970s funk (Sly Stone, James Brown), classic soul (Marvin Gaye), and Pentecostal gospel. He also heavily integrated the improvisational elements of jazz and the syncopated, lo-fi rhythms of 1990s East Coast hip-hop, citing icons like Prince and Jimi Hendrix as monumental inspirations.

Cold As Life is an American hardcore band based in Detroit, Michigan, formed in 1988. Lyrical themes consisted of brutal depictions of the horrors of growing up and living in a city plagued with corruption, murder, drugs, depression and poverty, along with the tragedy of losing friends, family and bandmates to murder and drug abuse. Rites of Spring was an American punk rock band from Washington, D.C., formed in late 1983. Along with Embrace and Beefeater, they were one of the mainstay acts of the 1985 Revolution Summer movement which took place within the Washington, D.C. hardcore punk scene. The personal nature of their lyrics put them at the forefront of the emerging emo genre. Rites of Spring are regarded as having “unknowingly created and defined” the emo subgenre of hardcore punk. They were influenced by Bands like Wire, Buzzcocks, The Smiths, Bob Dylan, Bad Brains, The Faith, Black Flag, Minutemen & other 1970s/1980s Punk, Post-Punk & Classic Rock.

Sonic Youth was an American rock band formed in New York City in 1981. Sonic Youth emerged from the experimental no wave art and music scene in New York before evolving into a more conventional rock band and becoming a prominent member of the American noise rock scene. Merauder is an influential Brooklyn-based heavy metallic hardcore band formed in 1990. Widely regarded as the “Godfathers of Metalcore”, they shaped the 90s NYHC scene by fusing hardcore aggression with heavy metal riffing. Fronted by vocalist Jorge Rosado, their gritty, unrelenting sound reflects their New York inner-city roots. Merauder built their sound on a foundation of thrash, early death metal, and the gritty, groove-driven New York Hardcore (NYHC) scene. Key influences on the band’s metal-heavy riffing and dark guitar tones included Slayer, Celtic Frost, and Venom. Acts like the Cro-Mags, Carnivore, and Stigmata shaped the band’s hardcore roots and crossover appeal. And the heavy, stompy, and rhythmic “Brooklyn groove” popularized by local peers like Biohazard and Life of Agony heavily impacted their pacing and mosh breakdowns.

They are best known for their heavy, metal-influenced sound and their seminal album, Rise of the Underdog (1999).
