Michael Eugene Archer (February 11, 1974 – October 14, 2025), better known by his stage name D’Angelo (/diˈændʒəloʊ/), was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer. Widely regarded as a pioneer of the neo-soul movement. D’Angelo‘s pioneering sound is rooted in 1970s funk (Sly Stone, James Brown), classic soul (Marvin Gaye), and Pentecostal gospel. He also heavily integrated the improvisational elements of jazz and the syncopated, lo-fi rhythms of 1990s East Coast hip-hop, citing icons like Prince and Jimi Hendrix as monumental inspirations.

Lyrical themes consisted of brutal depictions of the horrors of growing up and living in a city plagued with corruption, murder, drugs, depression and poverty, along with the tragedy of losing friends, family and bandmates to murder and drug abuse. Cold As Life drew musical influence from such bands as Negative Approach, Sheer Terror, Discharge, 4 Skins, Cro-Mags, Black Sabbath, and Slayer.
